将棋（しょうぎ）は、2人で行うボードゲーム（盤上遊戯）の一種で、一般に「将棋」というときは特に本項で述べる本将棋（ほんしょうぎ、古将棋や現代の変形将棋類、変則将棋などと区別するための名称）を指す。

チェスやシャンチーなどと区別するため日本将棋（にほんしょうぎ）ともいい、特に日本の「本将棋」には「持ち駒」の観念があることが特徴とされ、これは諸外国の将棋類似のゲームにも例のない独特のルールである（持ち駒を利用したチェス派生のゲームも考案されている）。『レジャー白書』によると将棋人口は推定530万人である。
国際将棋フォーラムや世界コンピュータ将棋選手権の開催などもあり、日本国外への普及も進みつつある。
