本来「落語」とは落語家が行う演目（ネタ）のなかでも滑稽を中心とし、落ち（サゲ）を持つ「落とし噺」（おとしばなし）のことを指したが、現在では人情噺・芝居噺・怪談噺をも含めた総称として用いられる。なお、「落語」という呼称の定着は明治に入ってからのことである。

落語は、凝った衣装や大がかりな舞台装置をなるべく使用せず、演じ手の技巧と聴衆の想像力で物語の世界が広がっていくという、きわめてシンプルで、また庶民にとっては身近な芸能として発展してきた。

落語の演じられる場所は、「寄席（よせ）」と呼ばれる常設館や一般のホールで演じられることが多いが、近年は若手による小さなライブもある。落語家の舞台のことを「高座（こうざ）」と呼ぶ。

近世都市を中心に発展してきた落語には、大きく江戸落語と上方落語の流れがあり、両者には、演目の内容や落ち（サゲ）、小道具、また慣習などに違いがある[3]。同名の演目でも舞台となる地名を変えたり、サゲが同じでも途中の演出を変えたりする場合がある[3]。上方落語だけに使われる道具として「見台」・「小拍子」・「膝隠」がある[2]。見台とは演者が前に置く小型の机、小拍子とは小さな拍子木、膝隠しは低い衝立である。小拍子で見台を打ち鳴らすことによって場面転換をおこなったりする[2]。また、上方落語独特の演出方法に「はめもの」があり、これは、噺の途中に入れる一種の効果音である。江戸・上方相互の交流は古くからさかんであった反面、地域性もまた現在に至るまで根強くのこっている。

世界的には、中国の話芸である「相声」のうち単口相声に形態が類似している。
