日本においては当初「アイドル」という言葉は、主に日本国外の芸能人を対象にした呼称として用いられた。
明日待子は「日本で最初のアイドル」（の一人）として挙げられる[6][7]。1960年代には、産業としての映画の衰退、本格的なテレビ時代の到来、グループ・サウンズのブームが巻き起こる過程で、徐々に「スター」と並行して「アイドル」の呼称が用いられるようになった。

その後、現在に至るまで女性アイドル産業が特に盛んな背景として、「元来女性は、男性にはない『感動しやすい習性』『精緻なる感受性』をもつがゆえに、巫女的な妹の力（いものちから）を得て、生きる力、幸福への道を伝えることができる」とする、民族学者・柳田國男の評論が持ち出されるケースがある。なお、日本におけるアイドルの隆盛時期は、不況の期間とほぼ完全に一致している、という分析もある。
