About this app

This app contains an English translation of the famous Thrymskvitha or Lay of Thrym from the Old Norse Poetic Edda. The comical lyric poem recounts what happens when Thor's Hammer, Mjolnir, is stolen by Thrym the Frost Giant. The vividly-told work has been called by some critics "the finest ballad in the world."

The story features the popular characters of Thor, Loki, and Thrym, King of the Frost Giants (Jotnar) and recounts Thor's journey with Loki to Jotunheim (realm of the frost giants) to retrieve his Hammer. The myth may have originally been an allegory to symbolize the fact that lightning and thunderstorms rarely occur during the winter. This app includes a public domain English translation by Henry Adams Bellows, as well as his scholarly introductory note and analytical footnotes for the poem. The topic may be of particular interest to anyone researching transgender issues in history and mythology.

What is the Poetic Edda?
The Poetic Edda (sometimes called the Elder Edda or Samundar Edda) is a collection of Old Norse poems, most originating from the 13th century Icelandic medieval manuscript known as the Codex Regius (or Royal Book), which is arguably the most important extant primary source on Norse pagan mythology and Germanic heroic legends. The Poetic Edda has had a wide-ranging influence on western culture, inspiring works as diverse as Wagner's operas to J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series.
