About this app

Background:

The term "durometer" denotes a measure of hardness used in the rubber and plastics industry. It is a value that is used to quickly reference the physical characteristics of a material. Although it is approximate (it varies whether measured at the surface or the interior of a cured part); and non-determinative (two materials with the same durometer may have different physical characteristics); it none-the-less is used due to the ease and convenience of its measurement in the field. Also, within the same rubber or plastic compound family, it yields a good relative measure of the stiffness of the material.

Issue:

Durometer is generally measured in several scales depending upon the industry where the measurement occurs. There is sometimes a need for converting the durometer readings between the scales so that the same language is spoken across industries. Traditionally there were published charts that enabled such conversion. However, in this day and age, there is a need for an electronic tool that can accomplish this task.

Scope:

DuroCon, is such a software program that enables the end-user to input the durometer in a known scale, performs an internal calculation, and outputs the corresponding durometers in the remaining five scales. It must be appreciated that DuroCon is a mathematical engine that utilizes highly non-linear equations to convert between these scales, therefore it may have slight rounding errors and yield results that are slightly different from those that are obtained via. empirical means.

If the output for one or more scales is missing (represented by "---") it implies that there is no equivalent durometer in that particular scale.

Limitations:

OpSo cautions the end-user that DuroCon results must never be used unilaterally for any purposes, but merely for getting a directional feel for the material properties across the scales. DuroCon is not a substitute to physical testing of the materials in a laboratory and/or a field setup with proper durometer measuring equipment.
