About this app

Elkonin Boxes is an app that can be used to help students build phonological awareness by segmenting words into phonemes. Elkonin boxes help students increase their reading skills by challenging students to segment words into their individual sounds and syllables. This app is perfect for a small guided reading group or one-on-one instruction with students.

How it works:

The teacher picks a Set and selects the “Picture” button to show the first image. The teacher or the student can press the “Word” button to listen to the word that goes with the image. If the student needs to hear the word more than once, the student can press the “Word” button again. The student pushes the counters into the elkonin boxes as they repeat the word and say each phoneme in the word.

This app includes the following:
2-phonemes Set 1
This set contains 13 pictures that are segmented into 2-phonemes. The pictures in this set include: bee, bow, die, egg, eyes, hay, key, knee, pie, show, tea, tie, two.

3-phonemes Set 2
This set contains 10 pictures that are segmented into 3-phonemes. The pictures in this set include: bed, cap, dog, goat, jet, lock, mat, pen, rat, van.

3-phonemes Set 3
This set contains 10 pictures that are segmented into 3-phonemes. The pictures in this set include: ant, bat, can, cat, duck, log, pig, pot, seal, tire.

3-phonemes Set 4
This set contains 11 pictures that are segmented into 3-phonemes. The pictures in this set include: bug, cup, gate, ham, jeep, leg, pan, pill, rake, tape, tub.

3-phonemes Set 5
This set contains 10 pictures that are segmented into 3-phonemes. The pictures in this set include: bike, book, cake, comb, feet, head, hose, jam, juice, pin.

3-phonemes Set 6
This set contains 10 pictures that are segmented into 3-phonemes. The pictures in this set include: bell, bus, cage, gum, hat, lake, map, nose, sun, ten.

Blank Elkonin Boxes
This page has a blank 2-phoneme box and a blank 3-phoneme box on the same page. You can use this with your own set of pictures/words with your guided reading group or one-on-one instruction.

The student can write down each phoneme they hear on a recording sheet after they have done the elkonin boxes. I have made recording sheets for each Set that you can download for free at the following website: http://primaryflynn.blogspot.ca/

The game contains no ads.
