THE PIONEERS OF RADIO

first broadcast in the country, attributed by some to Dr. Adolfo

The first concession was for the XELK, granted on 16
December 1939 to the engineer José Miguel Acevedo, as recorded
Ernesto Juárez Frías in his book Gallery of Zacatecan Characters.
He started out as a radio amateur with short wave sets,
skillfully manufacturing speakers and amplifiers. As the years passed,
he associated with the engineer Jesús Macías, with whom he founded the first
radio station from Zacatecas, which with the acronym XELK began to
transmit on frequency 1, 230 kilocycles, from the center of the
Zacatecas city. With great ingenuity, Acevedo manufactured the
station devices, assembling all the equipment: the console, the
plant cabinets, the antenna, the relay.
Son of Zacatecans whom the revolutionary movement and its
devastating events made José Miguel Acevedo emigrate to Durango
was born in La Purisima and received academic training in Gómez Palacio until
he become an electrical mechanic. He would then move on to affirm his calling
at the Chicago Engineering Institute.
When he returned to Zacatecas, the engineer Acevedo adapted a large
truck as a studio theater and became a traveling spokesperson. through the streets and
alleys he played commercials, dedicated musical pieces and
he discovered speakers. He was a kind of traveling radio, the loudspeaker that
80 years later, it still prevails in the state today.
José Miguel Acevedo dedicated himself to this when he first arrived
to Zac the sound film in 1933. “Don Francisco Pérez Carreño, owner
of this innovative cinematographer, he commissioned engineer Acevedo to
took charge of the installation and sound at the Calderón Theater. Such
so that the first radio station in Zacatecas was in charge of an expert in
sound, the same one that on October 6, 1941 launched the second radio concession in the state, under the acronym that bears its initials, the
XEMA de Fresnillo, which was taken over by Mr. José Acevedo, his father.
