Africa is a vast continent, having its different regions and nations a great variety of musical traditions. The music of North Africa has for the most part a different history of the sub-Sahara region.
The music of North Africa covers a wide range of traditions, from the music of Ancient Egypt to Berber music and Tuareg music of the desert nomads. The musical art of the region has followed the rules of Arab and Andalusian music for centuries.
Traditional African music is usually functional by nature. The interpretations can be long and make the audience part of them. None of these musical forms is interpreted outside of their context and is mostly associated with a particular type of dance.
