Fingerstyle adalah sebuah tehnik bermain gitar yaitu dengan memetik secara langsung senar-senar gitar menggunakan ujung jari, kuku, atau pun pick (fingerpick) yang di pasang pada jari-jari kanan ( pada jari kiri bila bermain secara kidal ) . Istilah fingerstyle sendiri masih sering keliru di bicarakan di kalangan awam sebagai sebuah genre atau gaya dalam bermusik. Lebih dari itu fingerstyle adalah sebuah paket komplit berbagai macam tehnik gitar dan memetik, bukan hanya sekedar "style" dalam bermain gitar. Secara sinonim fingerstyle juga berasal dari sebuah kata fingerpicking style, yang terlahir dari sebuah tradisi musik-musik rakyat (ragtime, dll) , blues, dan country di Amerika Serikat dan juga beberapa musik tradisional dari negara lain seperti flamenco di Spanyol, dan juga beberapa unsur Jazz dari daerah afrika. Tehnik memetik senar menggunakan jari sendiri berasal dari tehnik permainan lute (sejenis kecapi) dan vihuela , saudara jauh dari instrumen gitar.
