It's a hell of a fun diversion. You can end up with something powerful like 7 bishops or 3 queens, or something absurd like 13 pawns with the rest being knights. It's not exactly meant to be balanced, it's more about making the best of the hand you're dealt. Can't we all relate to that? Thankfully theres an "undo." Low-key wish there was a normal chess mode just because I love the visual and mechanical style of this particular chess game, but I know that would defeat the point.

Thought it was gonna be a great game. However, the ai you play with makes this game dreadful. At times, it could take a minute for it to figure out a move to do. I have also had games where I would've won, but the ai refused to make a move, forcing me to surrender. This game could be so good, as long as it didn't have such a horid ai

Though it doesn't have the flashy graphics I love this idea. I will admit I suck at this but I love this game, it take chess and flips it on its head its not even anymore its random and its great, the only issue I have is that a forced ad plays after a match but they have to make money somehow and truth be told at least it waits untill after the match. This is amazing and thank you for the fun frustration of Really Bad Chess🙂

Great game! I've been playing it for a long time now, and decided to buy away those annoying ads. The only issue with the game is that sometimes when I click the "undo" button, the game crashes entirely, which is frustrating. But otherwise a good game!

The game is fun, but has very apparent flaws: 1v1 is locked behind a paywall, while normally not an issue, when you have ads after every game played, it's not very fair to milk the game for such a simple feature. There should be more AI difficulties (there's 1), especially for freeplay. Also you can't undo more than once at a time, and they only give you a limted number of undo's. Conclusion: Devs are lazy and milk such a simple concept without making the game better; I could make this game lol

It's the most unusual game of chess I've every played. It makes me think outside the box. If you follow specific offense/defense strategies of masters it probably won't help your game but it might help with using piece combinations to best effect.

About this app

Really Bad Chess is just like chess, but with totally random pieces. Try 8 Knights, 4 Bishops, and 3 pawns — why not?

As heard on NPR's Weekend Edition

5 out of 5 Stars "An essential puzzle experience for anyone even remotely interested in strategy games" - TouchArcade

Whether you play chess daily, or quit just after learning the rules, this small twist will open the door to an entire new world of chess.

------WHATS IN THE “BOX”?
The free version of Really Bad Chess lets you compete vs. an AI in Ranked, Daily, or Weekly Challenges. Improve your skills using the included Freeplay mode. A single in-app purchase unlocks Versus Mode so you can compete against your friends locally! It also removes ads, displays captured pieces, and adds soothing alternate color-palettes to choose from.

------REALLY BAD PRESS

"Makes chess fun even if you’re really bad" - The Verge

"Feels more modern than chess has ever felt" - Applenapps

"Really Bad Chess takes a really bad idea and somehow manages to make it a lot of fun." - Pocket Gamer

------A WORD FROM THE DEVELOPER
Chess is one of those games I always wished I enjoyed, but its commitment to beauty, elegance, and perfect balance always turned me away. Really Bad Chess removes these boring restrictions and flips chess on its head.

As much as random pieces change the game in some ways, I was really surprised to notice how much the game remains the same, and how powerful some pieces are — you've never truly struggled against a pawn until you've struggled against a pawn in the back row.

For chess pros, Really Bad Chess will give you a new type of challenge — the pieces & the moves are the same, but you'll have to throw out your openings and your understanding of normal patterns of play.

For novice chess players (like most of us), Really Bad Chess greatly opens up the game. Instead of starting by studying openings, in your first games you'll get to discover the joy (and challenge!) of learning how to checkmate.

I hope you have as much fun with Really Bad Chess as much as I did making it.
