Installation Instructions

This article outlines two straightforward methods for installing Caerlaverock Castle Quest on PC Windows and Mac.

Using BlueStacks

  1. Download the APK/XAPK file from this page.
  2. Install BlueStacks by visiting http://bluestacks.com.
  3. Open the APK/XAPK file by double-clicking it. This action will launch BlueStacks and begin the application's installation. If the APK file does not automatically open with BlueStacks, right-click on it and select 'Open with...', then navigate to BlueStacks. Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop the APK file onto the BlueStacks home screen.

Great fun :) meant for the younger ones but really great fun for the grown ups too! Map was useful, letting us know where we needed to go to make sure we saw everything at Caerlaverock. It was also a nice way to learn about the people who lived in the castle during its heyday and how the castle was run - well worth downloading for a visit to Caerlaverock!!

The length of each part was long enough to keep my 8 y/o interested but not long enough to get bored with. Great addition to this castle and hopefully gets introduced into more castles/tourists destinations. It gives a small glimpse into the life of the people who used to live there.

Great app to keep the 4yo daughter (and me!) entertained on out walk around the castle. Only small issue was some of the signs were a bit too high for her but I was able to tilt them to a better angle for her.

Great idea. Managed to walk round and enjoy the castle without my 8 year old complaining as he was engrossed in this app. App ate my phone battery though which was a shame. Staff at the castle are absolutely wonderful.

fantastic app, worked with out a issue and enhanced our visit, as we learnt a lot more about the people who lived and worked in the castle in a fun way. my son really loved it and the story telling

Very entertaining and loved that you could photo bomb the characters! It would have been good if more actual history had been weaved onto the story.

About this app

Meet the characters of the Caerlaverock Castle household and discover how they lived in 1312, as you bring them to life with our Castle Quest augmented reality (AR) game.

Follow the 3D GPS map to find the virtual staff members of the castle household as they gather to celebrate the homecoming of Sir Eustace Maxwell and his wife Lady Agnes.
• hear stories from 11 members of the castle household
• collect a piece of flag from each character you meet
• piece together your flag to complete your challenge

Each character you meet, from our resident cook to a monk from neighbouring Sweetheart Abbey, will share a pieces of the Maxwell flag which had been torn up following the siege. Can you collect them all and piece them together?

But beware, one member of the household is a traitor. Can work out who they are as you collect your pieces of flag? All will be revealed at the end!


HOW TO USE THE APP
Use the 3D GPS map to find the characters around the castle and grounds. When you reach a trigger post, tap the AR button, then point your phone at the central image on the panel to see a character appear.

Remember to ask for a piece of flag (codeword: handkerchief) as you meet each character!

SAFETY NOTICE
• be aware of your surroundings as you use the app
• don’t look at the map or characters while walking up or down steps, or on uneven ground
• children using the app should be accompanied by an adult
• charge your device before your visit so you can enjoy this app fully

ABOUT CAERLAVEROCK CASTLE
A wide moat, twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements make Caerlaverock the epitome of the medieval stronghold. It was once the chief seat of the Maxwells, one of the noble families of the south of Scotland.

The Maxwells repaired and updated Caerlaverock over the years, but it was besieged and captured multiple times throughout the Wars of Independence with England. After the siege in 1640, the castle was stripped of valuable fixtures and fittings - Caerlaverock has never been used as a place of defence since.

This app was developed by Jam Creative Studios for Historic Environment Scotland and is available for free with no in-app purchases.
