Looks like each button produces a permutation cycle of 8. The particular cycle produced depends on directly adjacent nodes. Still haven't figured out if there are any particular rules which govern why this cycle was chosen. I thought it might have something to do with flow but hitting the one in the center on an empty board produces asymmetrical results... EDIT: Oh, I see. I "Looked inside" and it's based off those umbrellas. That's what produces the asymmetry.
