Ertugrul, often with the title Gazi (1191/1198, Ahlat-1281, Sögüt) was the father of Osman I who was the founder of the Ottoman Empire. He is the leader of Kayi who is a clan of Turkish Oghuz. When he arrived in Anatolia from Merv (Turkmenistan) with 400 people riding to help the Sultanate of Rûm against the Byzantine Empire, Ertugrul indirectly made a chain of events that led to the founding of the Ottoman Empire. Like his son, Osman I and his future descendants, he is often referred to as Ghazi, he is a warrior who fights for Islam.

In 1230, Ertugrul was asked to help the Sultanate of R melawanm against the Byzantine Empire. Ertugrul accepted the Karaca Dag region, which is a mountain near Angora (now Ankara) by Ala ad-Din Kay Qubadh I, namely Sultan Turk Seljuk of Rum. One evidence suggests that the thought of the Seljuk leader gave the territory to Ertugrul so that Ertugrul was expected to expel any enemy from Byzantium or from other enemies. Then, he got the village of Sögüt which he conquered in 1231 along with the surrounding area. He has 2 other children besides Osman I, namely Saru Batu Savci Bey and Gündüz.
