The world building and lore are great, but feel like wasted space in this story as it takes too much time away from the characters and pacing. You visit places that seem interesting, but you don't stay long enough to really make them worth noting. Some of these villages you visit could easily be cut and given to the characters who need more development. You only get a few short romantic scenes with the love interests, meaning you don't get to know either of them well enough to care.

Like the other works by this author, the writing is above average, while the mechanics are overly complicated and negatively impact the experience. Too many conflicting attributes and qualities get in the way of the story, and you can never be sure of the right decisions due to this, but in an unappealing fashion. Don't have your stats just right? Then be prepared to have your character practically stumbling through nearly every step of their adventure.

Incredible depth and world building. It reminds me of Pillars of Eternity. The characters are interesting, charming and have lots of secrets for you to uncover. The stat system is well designed and offers a wide range of options for character building and expression. Everything from physical capabilities, to renown for various actions, to which of the various unique gods you're a patron of. There's also a strong sense of adventure and discovery as you journey across the well-crafted world.

I loved the diversity of the choices. I felt like I was shaping my character with the most creative freedom I could possibly have. The writing is also excellent. However, I couldn't connect with the game. The consecutive walls of text get tiring to read. There's too much lore and while I appreciate it's part of a bigger world/history, I'd suggest toning it down. One can get side-tracked with history and get disappointed when they realize none of those bits are useful in the current game.

A very lengthy and epic adventure, richly described with tons of fun lore behind it. The action is fantastic, the characters are interesting, and the story evokes a Lord of the Rings feeling; you and your companions against unstoppable evil. The skill check system is explained in the game. The majority of the time it's easy to interpret which attributes and professions will be tested, and failures and half-successes aren't too punitive. Personality stats seem to flip too much, choice by choice.

Interesting. Lot of info thrown at you very early on. In a longer novel youd have time to see that explained and see questions answered, but you dont really see that here. otherwise, a very interesting idea with some good aspects. A little too easy to game the stats. Within a few chapters my character was a great warrior, archer, hunter, scholar, etc. I literally could not fail.

About this app

Chosen by the gods, you must battle savage monsters, corrupt priests, and mad philosophers to save reality from the dark god of destruction!

"Pon Para and the Great Southern Labyrinth" is an interactive Bronze Age fantasy novel by Kyle Marquis, the first game in the Pon Para trilogy, where your choices control the story. It’s entirely text-based--430,000 words, without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Years ago, in the Behemoth War, the forces of evil tried to destroy the world with Raun, the dark axe of destruction. Your parents united with King Hyras to win the Behemoth War and save the kingdom, becoming legendary heroes.

You have been raised far from the intrigues and corruption of the great cities–and from the plots of the gods. But after twenty years of peace, the pirate king Lord Vankred has found Raun. Under the threat of war, the gods grant you their powers. You must find the mad King Hyras and defeat Vankred before he can assassinate the King and shatter the Three Nations.

But the gods have their own plans for you, and so does the secret master of the Great Southern Labyrinth.
