About this app

The Route of Medieval Churches is the name of the thematic route designed with the intention of thoroughly familiarising interested tourists with a unique religious and cultural heritage found in the Carpathian Basin. This thematic route was created with the purpose of presenting the medieval ecclesiastical heritage of three geographical units, which previously formed a historical region in the past: Northeast Hungary, Kárpátalja (Subcarpathia) and the northern area of the region called Partium. The route crosses Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county in Hungary, Satu Mare county in Romania and Transcarpathia in Ukraine. A web of common historical roots ties together these three administrative units.
The historical monuments and memorials located in the north-western part of Partium with few exceptions do not belong to the most well-known tourist attractions, however from artistic and historical point of view, they would deserve a more increased attention. Besides the ruinous or exemplarily refurbished castles featuring modifications made in different historical periods and the memorials of the famous representatives of literary history, the mainly protestant churches in villages and former country towns, featuring medieval ecclesiastical heritage, create a significant part of the region’s tourist attractions. A part of this tour crosses Satu Mare county including eight medieval churches located here, providing regular exhibitions and presentation for the visitors in order to find out more about the history of the churchs’ construction, the destiny of their congregations and their relics.

The Route of Medieval Churches interactive application helps you to find out more about the tourist attractions along this thematic route. The user of this application can find written, visual and in several cases audio-visual contents about these particular locations. The application can be downloaded for free, available in Hungarian, Romanian and English versions.
