Başçiftlik, Tokat ilinin bir ilçesidir. Başçiftlik İlçesi coğrafi konum olarak Kelkit Çayı bir eşkenar üçgenin tabanı kabul edilirse, Reşadiye-Niksar tabana bitişik köşeleri, Başçiftlik'te taban karşısındaki köşede yer alır.Başçiftlik İlçesinin kuruluş tarihi hakkında kesin bir bilgi yoktur. Kuruluş tarihi yaklaşık 400 senenin üzerinde olduğu tahmin edilmektedir. Bir rivayete göre ilçenin Fatih Sultan Mehmet'in Trabzon-Rum,Pontus devleti üzerine açtığı sefer sonucu kurulduğu da söylenir. Başçiftlik daha önce Niksar ilçesinin doğu bölümüne rastlayan ve Ayvaz önü mevkiine yakın bir yerde ilk yerleşimini yaptığı bilinir. Hatta o zamanki Başçiftlik mezarlığı çok yakın zamanlara kadar aynı adla anılmakta idi. Söz konusu mezarlık yakın zamanlarda Niksar Belediyesinin arsa parselleri ve şahısların buralara sahip çıkması sonucu mezarlık dağıtılmıştır. Tarihi kesin olarak bilinmemekle beraber, o zamanki sosyal durum ve Niksar çevresindeki bataklıklar ile o sıcak havadaki sivrisinek burada yasayan halkı rahatsız etmiştir. Yine o zamanki Başçiftlik halkından olan bazı şahıslar bulundukları yerden doğuya doğru gittiklerinde geniş ormanlıklar ve soğuk akarsular arasında bugünkü Başçiftlik ilçesinin merkez camisinin bulunduğu yerde,geniş bir alan bulmuşlardır. Geri döndüklerinde halklarına: “ Öyle bir yer bulduk ki otu sümbül kuşu bülbül” diye methetmişlerdir. Bunun üzerine köy halkından beş hanenin buraya yerleştiğini daha sonrada göçmeyerek ikameti devam ettirdiği söylenir. İsminin de buradaki beş haneden dönüşerek Beşçiftlik oldugu, daha sonrada Başçiftlik 'e dönüştüğü rivayet edilir.
