About this app

Le domus romane del Celio sottostanti la basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, alle pendici del Celio, sul Clivo di Scauro tra il Colosseo e il Circo Massimo, sono state aperte al pubblico nel 2002.

Insieme agli Scavi di San Clemente rappresentano uno dei luoghi più affascinanti della Roma sotterranea per la straordinarietà dello stato di conservazione degli ambienti affrescati e per l’altissimo valore artistico e di interesse religioso del sito.

Le domus, note anche come la casa dei martiri Giovanni e Paolo, racchiudono oltre quattro secoli di storia e testimoniano il passaggio e la convivenza tra paganesimo e cristianesimo.
I vasti ambienti affrescati, in origine botteghe e magazzini di un edifico popolare a più piani (insula), furono infatti trasformati nel corso del III sec. d.C. in un’elegante domus.
Al loro interno è possibile ammirare alcuni tra gli affreschi più belli di età tardo-antica.

Le domus del Celio sono di proprietà del Fondo Edifici di Culto del Ministero dell’Interno e gestite in esclusiva da Spazio Libero, società cooperativa sociale di Roma.
