To mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings and the Battle of Normandy, Caen Mémorial Museum is presenting this exceptional and first ever European exhibition on the well-known American artist Norman Rockwell.
Produced by the Norman Rockwell Museum in partnership with Caen Mémorial Museum, the exhibition is on tour with just one location outside the United States: here at Caen Mémorial Museum.
On 6 January 1941, the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, gave one of the most important speeches of the 20th century: the “Four Freedoms” speech.
At this time America was still not at war, unlike Europe and Asia. In 1943, Norman Rockwell took inspiration from this speech to create four paintings illustrating the “Four Freedoms”. During the war, these paintings travelled the length and breadth of the United States, raising 130 million dollars for the war effort.
For the first time ever, these four paintings, which are among the most important and best-known examples of 20th century American painting, are travelling outside the United States. They are being showcased alongside other works of art at Caen Mémorial Museum to mark the 75th anniversary of the Allied Landings and the Battle of Normandy.
