About this app

Our ‘Beyond Boundaries’ garden supports our vision for making Ireland a more inclusive place for everyone. 360 3D video and photography bring this year’s Bloom garden to the widest number of people allowing it to be enjoyed beyond the boundaries of the festival.
At Bloom, we used our Show Garden entry to showcase some innovative ways technology can be used to make our garden a more inclusive experience for every visitor regardless of ability. We used 3D printing technology to create a Tactile Garden Guide for people with visual impairments. It demonstrates how you can cost-effectively use technology to provide information in an alternative way and make the garden more accessible. We also created an immersive media experience of our Beyond Boundaries garden to bring Bloom to everyone who couldn't make it to the festival. 360 3D video and photography will bring this year’s Bloom garden to the widest number of people allowing it to be enjoyed beyond the boundaries of the festival. This is the second year that Enable Ireland has entered a show garden inspired by our mission to maximise independence, choice and inclusion for the 5,500 children and adults with disabilities using their services across Ireland. Our ‘Beyond Boundaries’ garden supports our vision for making Ireland a more inclusive place for everyone. We are delighted to have the support of our sponsors, including Solus, in making this garden possible and we look forward to spreading our message of removing barriers and expanding boundaries for people with disabilities at Bloom again this year.

Technology plays a key role within the lives of many of Enable Ireland's clients. Whether through supporting independence and daily living or facilitating access to education, employment, leisure or creative expression. Technology can be a means through which some Enable Ireland clients realise their goals and fulfill their potential.
This is why we wanted to highlight the importance of technology within the Enable Ireland garden at Bloom 2018. To illustrate the potential technology has to promote inclusion we first considered who might be excluded from experiencing an event like Bloom 2018. While those with mobility difficulties may find some areas of the festival inaccessible, in general and particularly within Enable Ireland’s garden, considerable thought went into physical accessibility. The hustle and bustle of the Bloom festival with the crowds and noises however is something that may cause distress or anxiety to another group who use Enable Ireland’s services, those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These aspects which are an intrinsic part of a festival experience and enjoyable to most may prevent some people with ASD from engaging and enjoying the wonderful gardens and spaces that are the heart of the event. We thought this a pity, particularly because our garden is designed to be a space that promotes feelings of calm, relaxation and contemplation. With soothing sounds, meandering paths and a sense of being enclosed yet outside within nature, this is exactly the kind of place that might be comforting for someone who feels anxiety in crowded busy places. So rather than incorporating Assistive Technology within the garden we captured the essence of the garden using immersive media technology and made the "Beyond Boundaries Garden" app. It is our attempt at bringing at least some of the garden experience those who might benefit from and appreciate a more solitary and relaxing garden experience. In providing some aspects of the tranquil garden experience on a mobile platform through Google Cardboard headset and ear phones it will no longer be restricted to a specific time and place and be accessible to people when and where they need it most.
