পৃথিবীতে নবী ও রাসূলগন এসেছেন মানুষকে ঈমানদার, খোদার হুকুম পালনকারী বান্দা হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করার জন্য। তাঁরা যে সব কাজ মানুষের কল্যাণের জন্য করেন, তারই ধারাবাহিকতা বজায় রাখেন খলিফা। এজন্য নবীর ইন্তেকালের পর আল্লাহ্ তাঁর অনুগত বান্দাদের মধ্যে খিলাফত প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেন। যার জন্য নবীদের জীবনী জানার পাশাপাশি ইসলাম ধর্মের প্রধান চার খলিফার জীবনী জানাও মুসলমানদের দায়িত্ব কর্তব্যের মধ্যে পরে। আল্লাহ্‌ তা’আলা বাংলা কুরআন এ বার বার উল্ল্যেখ করেছেন যে, তিনি নিজেই তাঁর খলীফা নির্বাচন করেন। যেমন বলেছেন, ‘ইন্নি জাইলুন ফীল আরযে খলীফা’ (সূরা বাকারাঃ ৩১) নিশ্চয় আমি পৃথিবীতে খলীফা/খেলাফত কায়েম করতে চলেছি। সূরা নূর আয়াত ৫৬-এ আল্লাহ্ খিলাফত প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছেনঃ তিনি খলীফা মনোনীত করবেন বা খিলাফত প্রতিষ্ঠিত করবেন যেমন তিনি পূর্ববর্তীদের মাঝে করে আসছেন।

খলিফা মূলত একটি আরবি শব্দ, যার অর্থ নবী সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লামের উত্তরাধিকারী। বিশেষত এটি ইসলামে ৪ খলিফার জীবনীর দিকে নির্দেশ করে যারা নবী সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লামের সঙ্গী ছিলেন এবং যারা হযরত মুহাম্মদ (সাঃ) এর মৃত্যুর পর মুসলিম সম্প্রদায়ের নেতৃত্ব গ্রহণ করেন। মহানবী হযরত মুহাম্মদ (সাঃ) এর জীবনকালের মত এই প্রধান চার খলিফাদের জীবন ও খুব সহজ ছিল না। তাই প্রকৃত মুসলমানগণ হযরত আবু বকর (রাঃ), হযরত ওসমান (রাঃ), হযরত আলি (রাঃ) এর পাশাপাশি হযরত ওমরের জীবনীও জানার আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেন।
