About this app

Solar 2D Live Wallpaper is an interactive and scientifically accurate Android Live Wallpaper designed for tablets and high resolution phones.

If you just want to test drive Solar 2D Live, the free version is here: Solar 2D LWP Free

Unlike other space-themed wallpapers, Solar 2D LWP is not "eye-candy". Instead it uses 2D images of the planets and Sun to simulate relative position, speed, and size of orbital bodies. Although 2D images are used, the underlying mathematics compute positions in all three dimensions. You can see, for instance, Mercury rising above and falling below Earth's orbit (the ecliptic) from the edge-on view.

You can interact with this background by touching individual planets to set a focus, touching the Sun to unset a focus, touching and sliding up or down to cycle through views, and touching and sliding right or left to rotate views.

Features include:

Scientifically accurate elliptical eccentricities (Kepler's first law), points of aphelion and perihelion, inclinations relative to the ecliptic, longitudes of ascending node, variable orbital speeds (Kepler's second law), and orbital periods (Kepler's third law). All planets (including the Moon, but not the Sun) have correct sizes relative to other planets. All orbits (except the Moon) have correct sizes relative to other orbits. All orbital periods are correct relative to the selected orbital period of Earth.

Scientifically accurate stars, northern constellations, southern constellations, and ecliptic (zodiac) constellations.

Touch any planet to "fix" its relative angle to the Sun. Once a planet is "fixed", the rest of the solar system and the surrounding stars will automatically rotate to keep it fixed. Touch the Sun to un-set any fixed planets.

Touch and slide right or left to rotate the view.

Touch and slide up or down to switch between views:

top down view (slide up) edge on view (slide up) bottom up view
bottom up view (slide down) edge on view (slide down) top down view

View the inner solar system from top down, edge on, or bottom up. The southern constellations are visible from the top down view. The ecliptic (zodiac) constellations are visible from the "edge on" view. The northern constellations are visible from the bottom up view.
