Good app.

First let's get the limitations of this app out of the way. There's a glitch here and there with the airspace data. Not all VRPs are present and TMA data does not include airspace class (requiring me to consult the AIPs to figure if I could expect a VFR clearance to cross the airspace, which is impossible in case it is class A). It doesn't receive ADS-B traffic. It is strictly VFR focused (doesn't even show publicly available instrument approach plates). Next, the good stuff. The developer runs a community where you can post your feedback. Usually feedback is swift and the glitches have been improving over time. Now the amazing stuff. The vector charts are really good. The most expensive subscriptions integrate geo-referenced visual approach charts into the moving map. Spectacular! (how I wish this could be true for instrument plates, SIDs and STARs). Even better, for some airfields, it has a taxi-mode that shows where we are in a geo-referenced ground chart. It has a few other features that make it awesome and work really well. Wind data predictions are integrated into the flight information, so I'm always aware of which wind component I'm probably having at the moment during flight. The most useful thing about this app is that it is not only a very well functioning EFB, but also a well integrated flight planning tool. It allows to plan a VFR route, visually or by inputting waypoints, calculates the flight log, including wind estimates and fuel calculations and generates a flight folder that includes those calculations and weight and balance. Overall, very comprehensive, indeed. Finally, all your preparation work is associated to your account and not to your device. This means that you can switch devices and not have to begin everything from scratch. In fact, the killer feature is that all of the flight preparation can also be done from a web interface that allows to use much bigger screens making it easier to use. Everything is automatically synchronized with the app (planes, routes and so on). As of the time of this review, the subscription prices are competitive. The value of its many strengths far exceeds the nuisance of its few limitations and the subscription costs are a fair charge for the overall value.

Minimum distraction in cockpit, just the right amount of nav info for VFR.

About this app

Flight Assistant is an aviation "moving map" GPS application.

Developed by pilots, it will be your best co-pilot on your Android phone or tablet.

Prepare your flight, download AIP (aeronautical) data, NOTAMs and weather data as well as airport charts and you are ready to take off.

Flight Assistant will help you to follow the flight plan that you have defined and will provide you with all the information you might need in flight.
Further more, Flight Assistant uses vector maps that are both much smaller and much more readable at all scales than the usual raster maps most other application use.

Flight Assistant comes with a companion web application that you can use to prepare your flights and manage your planes. https://app.flightassistant.aero
For added security, all you data is automatically synchronized to all your devices and the web(*).

The Flight Assistant application comes free, but you can subscribe to various data packages that enable more advanced feature in the application (comprehensive aeronautical data, HD vector maps, 3D terrain, etc).
