About this app

RoadBump is a tool for road maintenance and engineering professionals to get estimated International Roughness Index (IRI) information that previously was available only through very high cost laser/inertial profilers. RoadBump provides objective data on all types of roads (asphalt, concrete, dirt, gravel…)

RoadBump uses your Android device's GPS and accelerometer to measure the roughness of a road. It displays a map of the road that was measured, and allows you to zoom in to measure any part of the traveled path. RoadBump produces estimated IRI graphs as a moving average or in segment lengths that you specify (such as .1 mile or km). An accelerometer graph shows individual bumps, dips and waves.

RoadBump is extremely easy to use. Simply press the giant Start button, drive the road what you want to measure at normal speeds and then press the giant Stop button. Road data is gathered and held on the device so a network connection is not required.

RoadBump Free demonstrates most of the capabilities of RoadBump Pro. It allows you to verify that the RoadBump Pro application will work properly on your device before you purchase RoadBump Pro. It demonstrates RoadBump Pro’s ability to record a path, display the path on a map, display the various graphs available and to get summary level information about the path recorded.

NOTE: After installing and using RoadBump Free, please consider purchasing RoadBump Pro. RoadBump Pro differs from RoadBump Free in that it provides the following capabilities:
- Extract data that can be imported into ESRI’s ArcGIS GIS product
- Ability to save and manage recordings on your device
- Ability to move data to a PC via email, Google drive or Dropbox
- Ability to save a portion of a recording as a separate recording

RoadBump Free Highlights:
- Graphs IRI as moving average or segment average steps
- Uses low cost Android phone or tablet
- Supplements high end (high $) analysis
- Covers long distances at normal varying speeds (up to 2 hours of recording)
- Provides actionable data to support decision making
- Extremely easy to use
- Tested at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) at Auburn
- Summary screen shows IRI for the path recorded
- IRI values are normalized for varying speeds
- Network connection not needed to record and review data
- Graphs show data between the moveable start and end markers
- Graphs Present Serviceability Rating (PSR) as a function of IRI
- Graphs speed and accelerometer data
- User defined segment length
- Supports US and Metric measurements
- Color coded path on map shows smooth, normal and rough
- Configurable color limits for color coded path on map
- Switch between street and satellite views of path driven
- Map can be zoomed, rotated and aligned to graphs
- Adjustment for vehicle / device variations
- Accelerometer data recorded 100 times / sec
- GPS data recorded every 1 second

RoadBump Pro provides these additional capabilities:
- Extract data that can be imported into ESRI’s ArcGIS GIS product
- Stores and manages unlimited number of recordings locally
- Save a portion of a recording as a separate recording
- Export data via email, Google Drive or Dropbox – all as spreadsheet CSV files
- Export segment level IRI averages
- Export merged data with position and speed interpolated every 1/100 sec
