La riqueza de los recursos naturales y su aprovechamiento han sido claves en la transformación del territorio y del paisaje circundante a San Silvestre de Guzmán.
El agua como recurso clave para el desarrollo de la comunidad humana que ha interactuado con este medio, ha sido tratada de forma ejemplar teniendo en cuenta la situación geoestratégica que tiene el enclave. La riqueza del agua es una obviedad que aquí está presente tanto en las masas de agua subterránea en la zona de la cuenca atlántica como en el agua superficial protagonizada por el indiscutible protagonista y vertebrador Río Guadiana que; tanto él mismo como sus arroyos -que rodean el núcleo poblacional del municipio- han sido canalizados magistralmente para el aprovechamiento pecuario y agrícola.
La presencia de pozos y abrevaderos en el entorno de San Silvestre tiene una peculiaridad que no podría entenderse sin atender a la historia que ha conformado el territorio en el que nos encontramos. La tan poderosa red de pozos públicos y abrevaderos posee en algunos casos técnicas de canalización de agua desde la Edad Media, empleadas todas ellas para abastecer no sólo a la población local sino en gran medida a la ingente población flotante que tenía San Silvestre como lugar de paso.
