Originaire de Mélanésie ou de Nouvelle-Guinée, la canne à sucre nous arriva des Indes dans les bagages de Dionysos. Les Arabes l'emportèrent beaucoup plus tard, vers le VIIIème siècle en Sicile et en Espagne d'où elle partit sept autres siècles plus tard vers Hispaniola (Saint-Domingue).

La culture de la canne à sucre se propagea aussitôt dans les Grandes Antilles: Porto-Rico, Cuba, et dans toute l'Amérique Centrale et du Sud.

Ce n'est qu'en 1638 qu'elle fut introduite aux Antilles Françaises et que l'on commença à fabriquer du sucre et tout aussitôt de l'eau-de-vie ou guildive.

Aujourd'hui la Martinique, la Guadeloupe avec la lointaine île de la Réunion se partagent à elles trois la quasi-totalité du sucre de canne et du rhum importés en France.
