There aren't too many Android apps for plant identification, especially if you want something more comprehensive than "100 Favorite Wildflowers". In the past, if you wanted to ID a rare or unusual species, you had to bring a fat heavy book and wade through traditional keys. This one claims to have everything with in Washington with a corolla. That leaves out a lot of plants - conifers, grasses, sedges, rushes, ferns and their allies - but it still leaves 2286 species, over twice as many as any other app. The keys are easy to use and reasonably accurate. For difficult groups (like yellow composites) I have found that I sometimes have to run a plant several times before I get to a confident ID, but it's still easier and quicker than using a traditional key. The photos and attribute lists are great; the descriptions tend to be pretty skimpy. The bottom line is that since I got this app, all the other botany books get left in camp. It lacks some features I would like. You can't give it a list of known plants in a geographic area. You can't record when and where you saw a plant, or make any notes, within the app. There's no online support (e.g. links to Flora of North Amer...

The apps are based on our comprehensive interactive keys for PCs, which are subsets of the largest and most extensive database of plant characteristics produced anywhere. We sincerely appreciate the individuals, agencies, and institutions over the years that have graciously allowed us to include their copyrighted plant photos in our programs. Even with over 250 sources of photos, not all are of the highest quality. They are the best available and are included here for the help they provide for correct identifications.

Our keys run in software by XID Services. Richard Old of XID Services has produced a PC version, 1200 Weeds of North America, which is the most comprehensive weed identification reference in North America.
