Anoia, land of castles is an initiative that showcases Anoia’s castles and towers, whose abundance and diversity make them a major attraction.

We’re delighted to offer you a selection of 25 towers and castles that constitute a superb gateway to mediaeval Anoia, an unmissable area for history and nature lovers.

Many of the towers and castles in Anoia date from between the mid-10th and mid-11th century, a period when the counts of Barcelona, Osona-Manresa and Berga-Cerdanya occupied and repopulated the area, putting an end to Moorish rule. When the border shifted and the castles were no longer situated on the front line, they became the administrative centres of the new feudal lordships. The Claramunt, Montbui, Tous and Òdena families, among others, emerged as powerful lords at that time.

From the 14th century, the Cardona family gained control of the county’s main lordships, whose towers and castles became the residences of their administrators. As the centuries went by and cities grew in importance, the castles were gradually abandoned or turned into farmhouses or dwellings.

Today, they represent a magnificent calling card for the county of Anoia.
