This app is not designed for the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis, only as an aid in its management. Proper diagnosis and patient management are always the responsibility of the attending veterinary surgeon. **What is Canine Atopic Dermatitis and CADESI-4?**

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a genetically-predisposed inflammatory and pruritic allergic skin disease in dogs. It is caused by allergies against environmental allergies, such as pollen, house dust mites, moulds, etc. CAD accounts for around 60% of all allergies seen in dogs. It is characterised by a vicious cycle of inflammation, pruritus and excoriation, leading to repeated skin damage.

CAD is difficult to diagnose. The diagnosis is based on excluding other causes of dermatitis, such as fleas, food allergy, etc. The Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index (CADESI)-4 has been developed by leading veterinary dermatologists. With this scoring system the vet can see how serious the disease is, and once treated, measure the progress. It is also a very visual way to explain the situation and improvements to clients.

Management of patients with CAD is equally difficult, and often requires life-long multimodal management, including environmental modification, drugs, shampoos, topicals and specially formulated nutrition.
