আজীবন সংগ্রামী জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব ভাষা আন্দোলন থেকে শুরু করে শিক্ষা আন্দোলন, ঐতিহাসিক ছয় দফা আন্দোলন, সামরিক শাসনবিরোধী আন্দোলন, সর্বোপরি সত্তরের নির্বাচনে বাঙালী জাতির অবিসংবাদিত নেতা হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হন। ৭ মার্চ ঢাকার ঐতিহাসিক রেসকোর্স ময়দানে দাঁড়িয়ে তিনি বজ্রকণ্ঠে যে ভাষণ দেন, স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের ইতিহাসে তা হয়ে আছে এক চির অম্লান মাইলফলক। বঙ্গবন্ধু ঘোষণা করেন, ‘এবারের সংগ্রাম আমাদের মুক্তির সংগ্রাম, এবারের সংগ্রাম স্বাধীনতার সংগ্রাম।’

সামরিক বাহিনীর অভিযান শুরু হলে মুজিবুর রহমান ১৯৭১ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ২৬শে মার্চ প্রথম প্রহরে বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণা দেন। ধানমন্ডির ৩২ নং বাড়ি থেকে ওয়্যারলেসের মাধ্যমে স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণা প্রচার করা হয়।শেখ মুজিব দুই খণ্ডে তার আত্মজীবনী লিখেছিলেন।
শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ১৯৫৪ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত নিজের জীবনী লিখেছেন। অসমাপ্ত আত্মজীবনী ইংরেজিসহ আরও কয়েকটি ভাষায় অনূদিত হয়। গ্রন্থটি ১৯৬৬ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের কারাভোগের দিনলিপি। কারাগারের রোজনামচা গ্রন্থটির নামকরণ করেন শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের কনিষ্ঠ কন্যা শেখ রেহানা। ১৯৫২ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের অক্টোবরে গণচীনের পিকিংয়ে অনুষ্ঠিত এশীয় ও প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরীয় শান্তি সম্মেলন উপলক্ষে শেখ মুজিবের চীন ভ্রমণের অভিজ্ঞতা নিয়ে রচিত গ্রন্থটি আমার দেখা নয়া চীন।
