About this app

mFisheries is a suite of mobile and associated Web applications for small scale fishers. This suite has been customised and includes some jurisdictions, while it is customiseable for all jurisdictions. For info on requesting customisations for your jurisdiction please contact info@cirp.org.tt.

The suite provides SOS communications to local emergency response Authorities and personal contacts. A voice call is automatically initiated to the local Authorities, while full GPS location as well as date and time are transmitted via email. Other recipients, whose contact information is pre-defined, receive SOS messages with location, date and time via SMS.

mFisheries is normally configured for at-sea tracking. In this mode, the phone's location is tracked once outside the land boundary of a home jurisdiction. Tracks and SOS activations are available to local Authorities for viewing on a map-based companion mFisheries Web application. Users may opt to disable tracking. In the event that the mobile phone is outside of cellular coverage, mFisheries stores all communications including tracks and SOS messages on the phone and transmits it when back in coverage.

Amber alerts, not warranting the attention of the local Authorities, are broadcast within pre-defined mFisheries user groups. Stock messages such as "Need fuel", "Need ice", "Engine troubles", "Pirates" as well as user-defined messages are available for automatic transmission with activation of mFisheries Alerts. Users receiving mFisheries Alerts view broadcast messages on a map and may initiate direct navigation to a selected Alert location.

mFisheries provides tools for cardinal orientation (once supported by the phone hardware) as well as location viewing, logging, retrieval and navigation. Both current and forecast weather may be displayed. mFisheries also provides first aid information via audio, image and synchronized text; as well as audio stories on best practices for seafarers.

The application suite includes a Camera Tool which date, time and location stamps photos (once supported by the phone hardware) in an mFisheries folder on the mobile phone. These photos may be uploaded to a personal Web-based mFisheries Diary which displays the photos on a map, organized by date. For image captures on phones that do not support GPS meta data, the Fisheries Camera Tool populates a standard photo album.
