Grotesque, Godzilla-like monsters called "kaiju" have been appearing around Japan for many years. To combat these beasts, an elite military unit known as the Defense Corps risks their lives daily to protect civilians. Once a creature is killed, "sweepers"—working under the Professional Kaiju Cleaner Corporation—are left to dispose of its remains.
Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man, is unsatisfied with his job as a sweeper. From a young age, he has aspired to join the Defense Corps and kill kaijus for a living. After a few failed attempts, however, he gave up on his dreams and resigned himself to the mediocrity that provided a decent paycheck. Nevertheless, when an ambitious, 18-year-old recruit named Leno Ichikawa joins his cleaning team, Kafka is once again reminded of his desire to join the military.
In Japan, monsters known as kaiju regularly attack the populace with the Japanese Defense Force tasked with killing them. After their town was destroyed by kaiju when they were children, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro both vowed to become members of the Defense Force. Mina has become famous as commander of the Defense Force's Third Unit, but Kafka has failed the examination numerous times and is a member of the clean up crew, Monster Sweeper Inc., whose job it is to dispose of the monsters' dead bodies after battle. After a small talking monster flies into his body via his mouth, Kafka gains the ability to turn into a monster himself, which gets dubbed "Kaiju No. 8" by the Defense Force. Kafka remains fully cognizant while in the form, but gains superhuman strength, and becomes the first monster to escape the Defense Force.
Kaiju are monstrous creatures that come in different sizes and shapes. All of them have different features, some more humanoid than others. Every kaiju posses a core, which is their vital organ and weakness, inside their body, and since every kaiju comes in a different type the location of the core changes accordingly.
Most Kaiju shown in the manga seem to have no eyes. But even so, they are still able to locate targets. Their teeth are always visible and they come in different shapes such as regular human teeth or sharp and pointy teeth.
Powers and Abilities
All kaiju possess different abilities and powers, so it's quite rare to find similar kaiju. Every Honju (the strongest in a group of Kaiju) is given a fortitude number, which is a way for the Defense Force to measure a kaiju's power and its potential threat to humanity.
Some powers most kaiju have in common are super strength, proliferation abilities, and great fortitude levels. Some of them are able to fly and the most complex is even able to practice human language and, through that, talk.
Following a chain of unfortunate events and an interaction with the junior sweeper, Kafka encounters a parasite-type kaiju that forces its way in through his mouth—turning him into a humanoid monster. With his newfound powers, Kafka aims to give his lifelong dream a final try.
