Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), also sometimes known as Betta, are a species in the Gourami family that is popular as aquarium fish. During and after spawning, the male uses his mouth to pick up the drowning eggs and store them in a bubble nest (while mating sometimes helps his partner, but more often he only swallows all the eggs he has caught). After the female releases all her eggs, she is chased from the male area, because she is likely to eat the eggs. If he is not removed from the tank, he will most likely be killed by a man.
