About this app

Art is the expression of ideas through painting and this is where the master artisan from the golden period of Islamic history took a different course and with great mastery gave birth to the aesthetics of Islamic Art as we know today. Islamic Art is a broad subject that includes everything from calligraphy, stucco design, geometric shapes, floral patterns and architecture etc. This art was born out of the need to reflect the spiritual and reflective nature of the religion to reinforce the awareness of God through new forms of aesthetics. These new aesthetics had to be free from any portrayal of animate objects which possessed a soul in accordance with the Prophetic Tradition which prohibited portrayal of anything that possessed a soul.

Arabic calligraphy is the art of elegant and stylized handwriting or lettering. It involves harmonic and aesthetic formation of Arabic characters with a pen or brush and ink. In the Middle East, calligraphy is a highly appreciated and developed art form. Its genius lies in endless creativity and versatility. The Arabic calligraphy looks very attractive and sort of exotic. It has 28 characters written in cursive style from right to left. Arabic tattoo writing is comparable to a beautiful and intricate artwork making it more attractive as tattoo design. This is only an indication that more and more people are beginning to be interested in the cultures.

Calligraphy can be mastered by anyone. Like all other skills this is an excellent skill to master, it is also very easy to learn calligraphy. Calligraphy is a skill that many people feel envious of. It makes invitations, menu's and posters look extremely elegant and beautiful. It is possible to master this skill if you have the dedication and patience.

There are many styles of calligraphy, almost a style for every geographical region. For instance you can practice Celtic, East Asian, Arabic or even Western styles of calligraphy. It depends on the individual when choosing a style one is interested in. Some would prefer to practice the style of their ancestors and others would like to master more styles than only their ancestral one. When you learn calligraphy you can start from the basic block style and move on to more decorative and attractive lettering and symbols.

Popular Scripts Used in Arabic Calligraphy - Kufi is a highly angular script. Its squareness gives it a unique appearance. It was developed shortly after the establishment of Basrah and Kufat two cities in present day Middle East. Its primary use was religious. It might have been due to Kufi's geometrical construction that does not confine it to strict rules. Consequently, calligraphers writing in Kufi are free to experiment in their own ways. Along with Kufi, Naskh is one of the earliest scripts used for Arabic calligraphy. It is one of the few scripts considered suitable for the Quran. Naskh is easy to read and write. These qualities have helped the script spread from the verandas of calligraphers to general populace. Naskh is written with short horizontal stems.

The best way to learn calligraphy is to master one style at a time instead of getting confused with many styles. Practice one character at a time in the selected style and watch your imagination grow with confidence and time, bringing your hobby up to a professional and commercial level.
