İlk peygamber Hz. Âdem'den son peygamber Hz. Muhammed'e kadar pek çok peygamber gelip geçmiştir. Gönderilen peygamberlerin sayısı konusunda Kuran'da herhangi bir bilgi bulunmamaktadır. Bir hadiste peygamberlerin sayısının 124.000 olduğu, bunlardan 315'ini resullerin teşkil ettiği haber verilmektedir (Ahmed b. Hanbel, Müsned, V, 266). Fakat bir âyette "Andolsun, senden önce de peygamberler gönderdik. Onlardan sana kıssalarını anlattığımız kimseler de var. Sana kıssalarını bildirmediğimiz kimseler de var..." (el-Mü'min 40/78) buyurulması göz önünde bulundurulursa peygamberlerin sayısı ile ilgili bir rakam belirlemeksizin "Hz. Âdem'den Hz. Muhammed'e kadar gönderilmiş olan peygamberlerin hepsine inandım, hepsinin hak ve gerçek olduklarını kabul ettim" demek daha uygundur.
