Digital Memorial, 2017

Keep it Light, Jerusalem Biannale (Oct. 2017)

Humorous and absurd, Digital Memorial circles around my final separation from my father.
During the Shiva week that followed my father’s death, I ceremoniously lit a memorial candle each day. Enacting this familiar ritual, which had been especially beloved by my father, made me notice the phenomena of virtual memorial-candles, so common to social media and public screens. The ability to choose from plethora of candle images at the press of a button left a bad taste in my mouth. In this piece of video art, I re-imagine virtual memorial candles by combining images of commonplace objects with flames made from parts of the human body.
Digital Memorial invites you to laugh, even as you question the act of virtual commemoration. Which memorial candle can cross from the tribal campfire to a social-virtual platform?

In loving memory of my father, Mordechai Albaz
