About this app

Nata nel grande solco della tradizione normanna, è una preziosa testimonianza di espressioni artistiche diverse:
Arabo- normanno, lo stile originario che oggi si riconosce nel transetto e nella torre dell’orologio che si eleva sopra la cappella di San Bartolomeo,
Gotico- chiaramontano, quello che si ammira nella prima parte della chiesa con le sue colonne a base ottogonale che sorreggono gli archi a sesto acuto;
Rinascimentale è il motivo architettonico che si mostra nella facciata e nel campanile che la fiancheggia magnificamente;
Barocca la decorazione del presbiterio e la sezione centrale della chiesa.
La costruzione durò sei anni (1096-1102). Faceva parte di una “ecclesia munita” cioè luogo di culto e di difesa ad un tempo, che dominava e concludeva in luogo eminente il complesso fortificato di Agrigento. L’edificio a pianta a croce latina, ha una lunghezza di circa 100 metri ed una larghezza di metri 40. La costruzione inizialmente fu dedicata alla Vergine Maria Assunta e successivamente consacrata a San Gerlando dal Vescovo Bertaldo de Labro. Lungo la navata sinistra si susseguono sepolcri di arcivescovi e notabili appartenenti ai secoli che vanno dal XV al XVII. Nell’urna di vetro, vicino alla porta meridionale si trova il corpo imbalsamato di San Felice Martire. La tradizione popolare riconosceva nella figura umana un cavaliere di Carlo Magno, Brandimarte, paladino del re. Morto nel duello dei “tri contro tri” a Lampedusa..
