Architecture comes in many different styles with different characteristics. This App is about the style of modern House and how to identify modern buildings.
The Modern house was most typically a post-and-beam structure with a flat or broad low-pitched gable or shed roof. Exposed structure, an expressive use of modern materials, and the incorporation of landscaped areas, sometimes inside the house, were the main contributing elements to the architectural character.
One of the questions we are often asked is how we define the type of properties that we represent. What is a modern house, exactly?
When The Modern House plans was founded back in 2005, we used Modernism as a foundation stone, and its central themes remain at the heart of all of the homes we sell: flowing space, natural light and a truth to materials.
It’s not simply about the fabric of the building. In our view, a Georgian townhouse or a Victorian factory can be infinitely more modern than a Seventies bungalow – it’s all about how the space is configured and occupied.
Much of the above description could be applied to Contemporary Modern homes with the obvious distinction that these are being built in the contemporary context (right now). Some characteristics that differ include the current use of metal roofing, some uses of synthetic sidings, added steel structural support, and, in general, the Contemporary Modern home is larger than the Classic Modern home.
Also, the use of “Green” materials and systems are commonly used in Contemporary Modern homes, with architects and builders pushing the boundaries of sustainable housing and design.
