About this app

Panagyurishte gold treasure-Bulgaria
The panagyurishte gold treasure is a Thracian treasure, dated to the end of IV-beginning III century b.c. It was found in 1949 two km south of panagyurishte.
The treasure is a beautiful golden service with very rich decoration and ornamentation. Use or for feasting or for religious sacraments and rituals associated with the Thracian mythology. It consists of nine Court made of pure gold with total weight over 6 kg.
Four of rhytons dating are shaped like heads or as front of the bodies of animals – RAM, goat, and 2 are the head of a fallow deer. On top of rhytons dating are artistically depicted mythological scenes and characters from Greek mythology. One of rhytons dating is a solemn Feast in honor of the wedding of Dionysus with the Cretan Princess Ariadne. Three of the containers are pots shaped like the head of Amazon. The handles of these pots are shaped like Centaurs-mythological creatures with the body of an animal and the head of a man.
Craftsmanship and has the phiale-trough-shaped tray. On it are engraved four rounds with 24 convex ornament in each round with decreasing size from the edge to the center of fialata. The outermost and the two smaller ones are shaped like Negro Heads, and the last is the most inner circle of acorns. Between the rows and individual elements fialata is decorated with vegetal ornamentation.
The most interesting in form and decoration is the big Court amforoviden. The handles are shaped like fighting each other Centaurs, and the two holes for pouring the wine are located at the base of the Court as a Negro. Between the Negro Heads is depicted the figure of the infant Heracles, struggling with the snake. Extremely rich decoration of the vase is complemented by expertly recreated scenes from mythology.
The subjects of the Panagyurishte treasure are complete as extremely rich and high artistic value service for ritual sacrifices. They are particularly important for the study of the THRACIANS and their way of life, their links with Hellenistic culture and similar beliefs.
Following testing of the archaeologists came to several hypotheses regarding the origin of the vessels. More popular are two: the first is that the items are made in the town of Lampsak, Hellenic colony located on the southern coast of the Black Sea, in present-day Turkey. A second hypothesis, which recently began to prevail after the archaeological discoveries in Bulgaria in recent years and the high mastery in workmanship of found objects is that the service is made in a local zlatarsko Studio located in the area of panagyurishte.
Who was his owner? Is it possible that belonged to one of the Odriskite Kings? What prompted him to hide it in the ground? Accurate response we can get. We can only guess, but that doesn't stop us from enjoying the Panagyurishte gold treasure, like the invaluable, highly artistic and unique witness of antiquity.
