About this app

Drawing a Dragon

When you want to draw that fire-breathing dragon, or that huge flying one, then it is important to first sit back and imagine it in your mind. Make up a clear picture of how you want your drawing to look like.

Then think of the surrounding the dragon will have: Will it fly? Or rest on a mountain? Maybe it will be in the ocean? As this will later make it easier once you really get going with your drawing.
The easiest mediums to use in my opinion is pencils, but some people like working with water colors too, so it is really up to you and what suits you the best. The pencils I prefer are the one called "clutch pencils", I like those simply because you get thin clean lines, while from normal pencils you get very irregular lines simply because they need to be sharpened a lot.

The best way to begin your drawing is to sketch it lightly with a pencil, then once you start seeing the result you like in the sketch, you start putting more pressure to the pencil on the lines that you like.

When the shape of the dragon is done, you should start adding the background lightly. I really think a drawing without a background very often makes the dragon look less appealing.

Once you got your dragon and your background in there, start adding shadows to it, and those finishing touches that really makes or breaks a good drawing. That is why it is very important not to stress your drawing, once it is getting "almost" done... look for areas where you can insert more details etc.
