The Spanish artist Joan Miró was born in Barcelona. He produced a fascinating spectrum of depictive means that stand out for their diversity and power of invention. The exhibition entitled 'MIRÓ – World of Monsters' is concerned in particular with the sculptures Miró created in the 1960s and 1970s. These works are less well-known than his paintings and works on paper.
The sculptures are combinations of everyday objects that the artist has found and made into fantastical creatures; these are then cast in bronze. Some have been painted in bright colors, so that it feels as if Miró's gaily colored paintings have come to life. For Miró, these creatures belong to his »phantasmagoric world of living monsters«. Together with a selection of paintings and works on paper, they show Miró's mastery of all genres. The exhibition is an exclusive cooperation with 'Fondation Maeght', which is based in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the south of France. With over 160 pieces, the foundation has one of the most extensive collections of Joan Miró's sculptures.
