The origin of the word kebaya comes from the Arabic word abaya which means clothing, but another version refers to it from the word "Kebyak" or "Mbayak" from the Javanese community. There are opinions that say kebaya originates from China. Then it spread to Malacca, Java, Bali, Sumatra and Sulawesi. After acculturation that lasted hundreds of years, clothing was accepted in local culture and norms. But there are also opinions that kebaya is indeed from Indonesia.
