The cave complex is dedicated to Lord Murugan and contains some of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India. Who is Lord Murugan?
Lord Murugan, also known as Skanda, Karttikeya, Subramaniya, and Sri Subramaniyar, is the Hindu God of war, victory, justice, and youth, and the patron deity of Tamil Nadu in South India. He is the Son of Shiva, and identified as an aspect of Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita (Ch. 10, Verse 24). Murugan became the supreme General or Commander-in-Chief of the demi-gods and led the army of the Devas to victory against the demons. Lord Murugan also rides a peacock and wields a sacred lance or spear, called the Vel. Murugan is often worshipped as a child-God, very similar to the worship of Krishna in north India.
