This article outlines two straightforward methods for installing Athens birding on PC Windows and Mac.

Using BlueStacks

  1. Download the APK/XAPK file from this page.
  2. Install BlueStacks by visiting http://bluestacks.com.
  3. Open the APK/XAPK file by double-clicking it. This action will launch BlueStacks and begin the application's installation. If the APK file does not automatically open with BlueStacks, right-click on it and select 'Open with...', then navigate to BlueStacks. Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop the APK file onto the BlueStacks home screen.

About this app

The application Athens Birding is a digital field guide for birdwatching in Athens area. The app includes 9 routes, crossing all natural areas near the centre of the Greek capital city and provides active navigation to the birdwatcher to discover the more interesting bird species.

Birdwatching areas include the Lycabettus hill, the Athens Αcropolis area, the Filopappou hill, the Ancient Agora area, the National Garden park, the Sygros Estate park, the "Antonis Tritsis" park and the Tourkovounia hills. Each area is explored through an easy hiking route, designed to zigzag across the most quiet and scenic places.

The application offers detailed offline maps and a short introduction, including a complete list of bird species, for each area. A comprehensive search engine provides access to high quality original photos and info of at least 100 different bird species.

In the field, the app guides you along the route by displaying messages and warnings on every junction or other important location. If the hiker gets off-trail, the app indicates the shorter way to get back safely. On every step, the app popups the relevant bird species and points to its photo and short information.

The cartographic company AnaDigit, creator of the application, has issued hundreds of hiking paper maps and some 50 hiking applications for Greece (eg. maps of Corfu, Kefalonia, Kalymnos, Santorini, Crete, Sifnos, and 6 apps covering the Attica region). Athens birding is the result of a happy collaboration with Lefteris Stavrakas, the fervent birdwatcher behind Greece Bird Tours.
